Larry Dixon, Jr., is beginning his third year as an assistant basketball coach on head coach Randy Peele's staff.
Dixon, a 1996 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC, served as an assistant coach at East Carolina University for the three years prior to joining Peele's staff at Winthrop. He also served as an assistant coach at South Carolina State for two years (2003-2005) and for one year at St. Andrews College (2002-03).
Prior to his college coaching experience, Dixon served as head varsity basketball coach at Garinger High School in Charlotte. While at Garinger, he led the Wildcats to a 21-7 record in 2001 and the North Carolina High School Sectional Championship. He was selected the 2001 Mecklenburg County Coach of the Year.
“I have had the privilege of knowing Larry Dixon since 1998,” said Peele. “I have known him as a friend and also on the professional level. He is a tremendous asset to Winthrop University. First of all, he is a very personable guy. He communicates well with people from all walks of life and he has a great eye for talent. Most of all, he is absolutely relentless as a recruiter and he brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm to our program.
Dixon’s duties will include recruiting, practice instruction, scouting and providing coaching assistance on the bench. Winthrop’s newest assistant coach is married to the former Cynthia Lockhart and they have one son, Devin, age 12, and a daughter, Leah, age 5.
