Women's and Men's Cross Country Teams Finish Second At Furman Invitational (10-10-09)

Three Women Runner Finish In Top 10; Men's Freudenthal Finishes Second By One Tick On The Clock

GREENVILLE, SC -- Winthrop's women placed three runners in the top 10 to finish second overall with 36 points, 15 behind first-place Furman. while the men's team also finished second as Adam Freudenthal finished second to lead the Eagles.

Brooke Spencer placed third in the 5-kilometer race with a time of 19:17.51. Carey Phillips was in fifth with 19:43.35 and Carly Moss placed seventh with 19:46.73.

Other Winthrop women's scoring times were Jennifer Schofield (11th, 20:26.14) and Samantha Coburn (13th, 20:43.04)

Led by Adam Freudenthal's second-place finish, Winthrop's men's cross country team placed second in the men's competition at the Furman Invitational on Saturday.

Freudenthal finished the 8-kilometer race with a time of 26 minutes, 43.02 seconds, less than a second behind race winner Charlie McGoogan of Furman. Kyle Carufe also had a top-10 finish for the Eagles with a time of 28:09.47 for 10th place.

The Eagles finished with 50 points, 13 behind team champion Furman with 37.

Other Winthrop runners were Johnathan Fazzary (11th, 28:17.25); Dane Flinchum (13th, 28:29.79); A.J. Fitzsimmons (14th, 28:30.63) and Ted Nisbett (21st, 29:11.02).
