SAVANNAH, GA--The Winthrop men's golf team finished 13th out of a 15-team field in the 2009 Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate which was held Monday and Tuesday at the Savannah Quarters Country Club.
Winthrop shot a 54-hole total of 904 on the Par 72, 7,016-yard course. The Eagles moved up one spot each round after opening play with a 309 on Monday morning. They followed that with a 299 on Monday afternoon and closed out play with a 296 on Tuesday.
East Carolina ran away with the team title as the Pirates fired a 7-under par 852 to win the championship by 19 shots over second place Wofford.
Freshman Brad Sill (Spartanburg, SC) led Winthrop as he tied for 32nd place after firing a 7-over 223 (76-73-74). Sophomore Brandon Truesdale and freshman John Conners tied for 48th position after shooting 226. Truesdale had rounds of 76-74-76 while Conners shot 78-75-73. Freshman Kamito Hirai shot 229 (79-77-73) to finish in a tie for 57th place. Red-shirt freshman Cameron Bell finished 81st with a 249 (83-85-81).
The medalist honor was captured by ECU's David Watkins who took a 6-shot victory after shooting an 11-under 205.
