ROCK HILL, SC--NCAA President Mark Emmert will be the keynote speaker on January 21 as Winthrop Athletics celebrates the university's 125th anniversary by honoring 15
Teams of Distinction at the DiGiorgio Campus Center Ballroom.
This by-invitation-only event is being hosted by the Winthrop Athletics Hall of Fame Committee and the Athletic Department and will be one of the highlights of Winthrop's yearlong celebration of its founding in 1886. All former student-athletes and coaches from the 15 selected teams have been invited to attend, according to Athletic Director
Tom Hickman.
"This event gives Winthrop Athletics an opportunity to recognize 15 teams that were selected based on achievement of certain milestones in their sport," he said. "We are also honored to have Dr. Emmert as our keynote speaker. Dr. Emmert served as president of the University of Washington before assuming his new duties with the NCAA on November 1."
The list of teams to be honored include: 1980-81 Men's Basketball, 1981 Baseball, 1987 Softball, 1987-88 Men's Basketball, 1988-89 Women's Golf, 1994 Women's Tennis, 1995 Baseball, 1997 Men's Tennis, 2000 Men's Cross Country, 2002 Volleyball, 2002 Men's Soccer, 2006 Women's Soccer, 2007 Softball, 2006-07 Men's Basketball, 2008-09 Women's Basketball.
