ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men's and women's cross country squads have been named 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Winthrop's men compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.26 for the fall semester while the women's team had a 3.36 GPA.
Both the Winthrop men and women were among three teams from the Big South Conference to earn the honor. The men's team was joined by VMI and Coastal Carolina while Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina were named on the women's side.
"We are very proud of the accomplishments of our young men and women in the classroom," said Winthrop head coach Ben Paxton. "They work extremely hard on the course in practice and during meets and they also apply a great effort to achieve academically."

The women's squad includes: Caroline Allen, Fr., Haddonfield, NJ; Samantha Coburn, Sr., Clover, SC; Heidi Dean, Fr., Florence, SC; Savannah Holder, Fr., Greer, SC; Tori Koterba, So., Rock Hill, SC; Carly Moss, Jr., Florence, SC; Carey Phillips, Sr., Chesnee, SC; Jennifer Schofield, Fr., Hatfield, PA; Lisa Sickman, Sr., Clarkston, MI; Brooke Spencer, Sr., Greenville, SC; Jaclyn Warden, Fr., Hartsville, SC.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship and also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.
