Winthrop's Ashley Howard Highlights Meet With Record-Setting Performance In Discus
ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop senior discus standout Ashley Howard set a new track and Big South Conference record and moved up in the national rankings while sprinter Sasha Robinson and hurdler Rebecca Holmes set new school records during the final day of the 2010 ASICS Winthrop Invitational which was held at the Irwin Belk Track Complex this weekend.
Howard, from Wilmington, OH, broke her own track record and the Big South mark set in 2008 as she had a throw of 166-feet, six inches. That throw also moves her up to fourth place in the NCAA women's discus national rankings.
Robinson, a red-shirt junior from Norris, SC, set a new 200 meter dash school record as she was clocked in a winning time of 54.99 second while Holmes, a senior from Atlanta, GA, captured first place and set a school record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.07 seconds. Holmes also took fourth place in the 100 meter dash after finishing in a time of 12.06 seconds.
The Winthrop women's team also got a strong performance by senior Sarah Young of Liberty, SC, who won the triple jump competition with a leap of 35-feet, 3 and ¾ inches. Young also finished second to teammate Holmes in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.79 seconds.
The Winthrop women's 4x100 meter relay team claimed second place. The relay team comprised of Amami Antia-Obong, Monique James, Mardavia Lynch and Rebecca Holmes finished with a time of 47.74 seconds.
For the men's team, Billy Pearce and Adam Leroux claimed third place awards in the discus and 800 meter run, respectively. Pearce, a sophomore from Stephen, SC, had a throw of 147-feet, 7-inches. Leroux, a sophomore from Nova Scotia, covered the 800 meters in a time of one minute and 55.65 seconds.
In addition to the Winthrop performances, two Irwin Belk Track records were set in the men's 200 meters and the men's 400 meter hurdles. Jeffrey Pendergrass from Vorhees College had a time of 20.65 seconds in the 200m while Steve Swern of Rutgers ran a time of 51.86 seconds in 400m.
