NINETY SIX, SC--Winthrop's men find themselves in second place and five shots off the lead after the opening day of the 2010 Big South Conference Golf Championships being held this week at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor near Ninety Six, SC.
The Eagles fired an opening round score of 291 over the par 72, 7,133-yard course and trail first round leader Coastal Carolina, the tournament's top seed. Winthrop which entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, leads third place High Point by six shots heading into Tuesday's second round of the scheduled 54-hole event.
Winthrop was led on Monday by sophomore Jordan Sease, who was playing the No. 5 position and came up with a 2-under par 70 to tied for fifth place in medal play. Freshman Kamito Hirai shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for sixth. The Eagles got rounds of 75 from both sophomore Kyle Bearden and freshman Brad Sill. Rounding out Winthrop's scores was an 82 by red-shirt freshman Cameron Bell.
Winthrop will be paired with Coastal Carolina and High Point when it goes off the first tee at 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday.
