Winthrop's Chances For Golf Title Look Slim Heading Into Wednesday's Final Round

NINETY SIX, SC--Winthrop saw its chances for a  men's conference golf title and NCAA regional bid slip away on Tuesday during the second round of the 2010 Big South Conference Golf Championships being held at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor near Ninety Six, SC.

After shooting the second best round on Monday with a 291, the Eagles turned in the highest team score on Tuesday with a 308 and slipped to fifth place, 23 shots behind tourney leader and top seed Coastal Carolina.  Winthrop began play just five shots behind the Chanticleers and six shots ahead of High Point.   Coastal shot 290 and maintained a 8-shot lead over second place Charleston Southern heading into Wednesday's final round.  CSU moved up from fourth place after firing a 286, the best round of the day.

Winthrop freshman Kamito Hirai is still in contention for medalist honors after finishing with a 73 on Tuesday.  He stands five shots back of the leader Dan Obremski of Coastal Carolina with a 36-hole total of 144.  Sophomore Kyle Bearden bettered his opening day score as he shot 73 to go along with a 75 and his tied for 14th place at 148.

Sophomore Jordan Sease, who was 2-under par after an opening day 70, saw his score soar to 81 as he dropped from fourth place to 22nd position at 151.  Freshman Brad Sill also dropped from 75 to 82 and holds 32nd place at 177.  Red-shirt freshman Cameron Bell rounds out the Winthrop team with a 163 (82-81)
