ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop baseball team had three players placed on the All-Conference and All-Academic Teams during the Big South Conference Awards Ceremony on Wednesday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark.
Eddie Rohan and Matteo D’Angelo received Second Team All-Conference honors, while Matt Thielepape was placed on the All-Academic Team.
Rohan is currently hitting .307 on the season with a team-high 13 home runs and is tied for the team-lead in runs batted in with 40. He has now led the Eagles in home runs for three straight seasons. Rohan achieved a career milestone in 2010 as he has eclipsed 40 career home runs and is now only the 10th player in Big South Conference history to accomplish that feat. He ranks fourth in Winthrop history in career home runs with 40 and trails Daniel Carte and Jacob Dempsey by two homers for second place. Rohan concluded the regular season ranked top 10 in the conference in total bases, triples, slugging percentage and home runs. This is the third All-Conference honors for Rohan in his career as he was named to the Second-Team in 2008 and the First-Team in 2009.
D’Angelo earns his second career All-Conference honor this season as he was placed on the Second-Team last season. He holds a team-high 8-5 record on the mound this season and also leads the team with a 4.01 ERA and 94.1 innings pitched. D’Angelo has tossed seven appearances of 7.0 innings or more and posted five straight starts of 7.0 innings or more from April 3 to May 1. He has also walked only one batter in seven of his starts this season. D’Angelo finished the regular season ranked in the top 10 for the Big South in individual pitching, earned run average, strikeouts, innings pitched, wins, games started and runners picked off.
Thielepape has set career highs this season in home runs (10) and RBI (38) to go along with his .313 batting average. The 10 homers are good for third place on the team and is tied for the team-lead with 16 doubles. His 50 runs scored on the season are also tops for the Eagles. He fell a single shy of the cycle in Winthrop’s 6-5 series-opening victory over VMI on May 14. Thielepape also posted a two home run performance in the series finale against Presbyterian on May 2. He is third in the conference in fielding chances with 454 and putouts with 410.
