Honor Roll List
ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop has the highest percentage of student-athletes in the Big South Conference who earned recognition on the prestigious Presidential Honor Roll list for the 2010-11 academic year.
Winthrop placed 61.09 percent (146) of its 239 student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll -- one of five full-time members to have at least 50 percent on the list. The percentage is the highest ever for Winthrop and marks the first year since 2006 that Winthrop's student-athletes have ranked at the top of the conference honor roll list. To achieve Presidential Honor Roll status, a student-athlete must attain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or better for the fall and spring semesters.
“We are certainly pleased with the academic performance of our student-athletes during the 2010-11 school year,” said Winthrop Athletic Director
Tom Hickman. “It is rewarding to see that the efforts of our coaches and academic support staff are producing the results we all hope to see. I am particularly grateful to Melissa Pluchos, our Academic Services Director, and her staff for their dedication to our student-athletes. I would also like to especially recognize the efforts our student-athletes put forth to achieve these outstanding results. This is just another indication of the quality student-athletes we have here at Winthrop University.”
A total of 1,469 out of 3,169 student-athletes (46.4 percent) in the Big South Conference achieved the honor for the 2010-11 academic year, according to Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. The 46.4 percentage marks the highest percentage since 2003 and is the seventh-straight year above the 40 percent threshold, as well as the sixth consecutive year-to-year improvement.
Ranked behind Winthrop was High Point which placed 59.17 percent of its 218 student-athletes on the list, while Radford had 56.02 percent of its 241 student-athletes among the honorees. Gardner-Webb was the fourth member with at least 50 percent, placing 52.62 percent of its 325 student-athletes on the annual listing, while Liberty had 51.64 percent of its 457 student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA for the 2010-11 academic year.
According to the conference office, eight Big South sports saw increased honorees from 2009-10. Those sports were baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's tennis, football and men's track/cross country.
“The Big South Conference has always taken a lot of pride in the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes,” said Kallander. “To have nearly half of all student-athletes make the Presidential Honor Roll for the seventh consecutive year is a reflection of the outstanding individuals in the Conference and their priorities. We are all extremely proud of the achievements of these fine young men and women.”
