Stollings Adds Swedish Standout Abigail Asoro

Women's Basketball Adds 3rd International Player

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop head women's basketball coach Marlene Stollings has announced the addition of Abigail Asoro to the 2012-13. It's the second addition by the women's basketball program this week.

Asoro, a 5-10 guard/forward, hails from Stockholm, Sweden where she has been part of the Swedish National Team system and has gained a ton of international experience. She is the third international player to joins the Lady Eagle program for 2012-13 as Stollings has already added Pamela Decheva (Bulgaria) and Christina Solmon (Jamaica).

“Abigail will have an immediate impact on the Big South Conference with her athleticism and length,” said Stollings. “She will arrive as the fastest player on the entire Eagle roster and fits perfectly into our style of play. She brings a tremendously competitive spirit and winner's mentality that has been honed over many years through playing high level basketball with the Swedish National Team. She is dynamic and has the ability to play positions 2 through 4.”

Asoro is currently a member of the U-18 Swedish National Team, which she helped capture the Nordic Championship. For her efforts, Asoro was named to the All-Star Team of the championship in 2011. She was also selected the MVP for the U-18 Swedish National Team. She's also competed in the 2011 European Championship, in which Sweden was the runner-up. In 2009 she was part of the U-16 Swedish National Team that competed in the U-16 Olympic Games. Asoro also participated in the Baltic Sea Cup three straight years.

“My assistant coach, Kevin Cook, did an incredible job using his international experience to connect with and ultimately sign Abigail,” added Stollings. “The entire staff has worked very hard to make this day possible. We are ecstatic to add Abigail to arguably the best Winthrop signing class in school history.”
Asoro makes eight newcomers to the Lady Eagle roster for the upcoming season. In addition to Decheva and Solmon, Stollings has added Shaquilla Nunn, Ashley Porter, Aliyah Kilpatrick, Juliette Love and Zoe Vernon.
