CHARLOTTE, NC-- The Big South Conference officials gave out weekly honors on Tuesday afternoon and Winthrop's
Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) was named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week
for Women's Tennis. This is the first time this season that Garcia has recieved this award.
Alice Garcia's performance versus Wake Forest's Andrea Retolaza earned her this award. Garcia defeated Retolaza, who is ranked 125th in the ITA rankings, in No. 3 singles 7-6, 2-6, 6-1. Garcia also teamed up with Giovanna Portioli in No. 2 doubles to defeat Xue Zhang and Karen Forman 8-2. Both points were vital to Winthrop's win over Wake Forest 4-3 Friday afternoon.
Alice Garcia has improved to 2-3 on the season in her singles matches and doubles matches. She is now 1-0 on the season against competition ranked in the ITA.
Alice Garcia and the rest of the Lady Eagles Tennis team will look to continue their success this weekend in Huntington, WV. They will play host school Marshall Friday at 4:00 pm and play #48 Penn St. Saturday. The time of the Penn St. match is to be determined.
