BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA- The Winthrop Eagles posted a 5-2 victory this Sunday afternoon over the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
Now 4-8 on the season, the Eagles will look to build on today's win and carry their momentum into UAB tomorrow when they face off against the Blazers at 1 p.m. Winthrop will then finish up their spring break trip when they head to Brevard College on Tuesday, March 12
th at 2 p.m.
The Eagles were able to capture the doubles point from Alabama-Huntsville by sweeping all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, sophomore
Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) and freshman
Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) took out Soto and Perez in a 9-8 tiebreak decision. Sophomore
Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and freshman Juan Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) finished off Kano and Oliveira 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. Junior
Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) and freshman
Ivar Aramburu (Pueblo, Mexico) posted a rather comfortable 8-4 victory over Graaner and Medeiros at the No. 3 position.
Alabama-Huntsville provided some resistance in the singles round, but the Eagles were able to fend off their charge by grabbing four of the six matches. Huntsville's Nestor Perez downed Aramburu 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 slot while Chris Kano took out Hirokawa 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot. Winthrop took care of business in the remainder of the singles matches as Comerford led the way posting the first victory for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jose Soto at the top spot. Nagovnak followed suit with a workman-like 6-0, 6-3 win over Fredrik Graaner at the No. 3 position. Freshman
Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) served up a straight sets win over Guilhermo Reyes 6-2, 6-2, while Boada posted his second victory in as many days with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Raphael Oliveira.
