The Winthrop Men's tennis team finished up their Alabama spring break road trip against UAB this afternoon. Yesterday's rain moved the match time to today at 12:30 p.m., which ultimately led to the cancellation of today's original match against Brevard College. Unfortunately the Eagles weren't able to ride home with the win as they fell 4-0 to UAB.
The Eagles end their road trip with a 1-2 record and own an overall record of 4-9. The Eagles will now look ahead and focus on the Big South Conference as all of the remaining matches on their schedule are against Big South opponents. Winthrop will look to start off their conference season on the right foot as they host new conference foe Longwood University this Thursday, March 14th
at 3:00 p.m.
UAB took the doubles point by capturing wins on the Nos. 2 and 3 courts. Eagle's sophomore Dylan Comerford
(Johannesburg, South Africa) and freshman Juan Pablo Boada
(La Paz, Bolivia) dropped an 8-4 decision to UAB's Dirube and Helliar at the No. 2 spot. Junior Yuta Hirokawa
(Niigata, Japan) and freshman Ivar Aramburu
(Pueblo, Mexico) also posted an 8-4 loss at the No. 3 spot against Pinto and Rondino.
With the loss of the doubles point, the Eagles were looking to take four of the six singles matches before UAB could get three. The Eagles fell short of their goal as UAB was able to capture wins at the Nos. 1, 3, and 6 slots. Sophomore Peter Nagovnak
(Kraubath, Austria) didn't have enough at the No. 3 position as he fell 6-1, 6-3 to UAB's Tom Puetz. Comerford and Boada both fell by the same score of 6-1, 6-2 at the Nos. 1 and 6 spots.
