Athletic Training/Sports Medicine is an integral part of every intercollegiate athletics program. The Athletic Training department at WinthropUniversity strives to provide comprehensive athletic training services to approximately 220 Winthrop student/athletes.
Since the success of Winthrop's teams depend on the well being of its student/athletes, Winthrop's Athletic Training department is dedicated to the care, prevention, and rehabilitation of medical conditions. The primary objectives of the Winthrop University Athletic Training team are the prevention of athletic injuries and the safe return for the competitive student-athlete. We are genuinely concerned for the student-athlete and have a desire to help them return to competition in the shortest amount of time. When a student-athlete is injured, the athletic training team works to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment, appropriate specialty referrals, communication with the coach, strength and conditioning staff and student-athlete to secure a complete and prompt recovery to the playing arenas. In addition to preventing and treating injuries, the Athletic Training staff provide nutritional supervision, drug and alcohol education, and general personal health advisement.
Head Athletic Trainer Jeff Lahr oversees Winthrop's athletic training staff. His staff includes Associate Head Athletic Trainer Trent O'Neal and Assistant Athletic Trainers Halee Erbe, Daniel Lundy, Brittany Bingham, and three graduate assistants (Courtney Upshaw, Stephanie Custer, and Josh Bennett). They work tirelessly to assist student/athletes in the school's 17 intercollegiate sports with the best medical care possible.
