Winthrop Features Top Notch Facilities For Its Athletes And Fans
The Winthrop Ballpark (Baseball)
The Winthrop Ballpark is one of the nicest collegiate ballparks in the south and is home to a nationally competitive baseball program. The original structure of the stadium was built in 2001. A second phase to the complex was completed before the start of the 2008 season that added offices, locker rooms, a players lounge, athletic training room, equipment room, weight room, indoor hitting facility, video room and a VIP box. The facility holds around 1,800 spectators.
Terry Field (Softball)
The Winthrop Softball complex with its grand entrance shown above, features four fields and a state of the art press box that contains three coaches offices, restrooms, a concession stand and storage room. The press box allows for broadcasting games at all four field locations. Terry Field (seen below) was dedicated in 2001 and has 300 seats with 100 chairback seats. In 2003, an indoor hitting and throwing facility was added to the already beautiful complex. The facility includes locker rooms, restrooms, indoor batting cages and an indoor field.
Winthrop Coliseum (Men's & Women's Basketball, Volleyball)
Winthrop’s basketball and volleyball teams play in the beautiful and modern 6,100-seat Winthrop Coliseum, the headquarters for the athletic department and located on Eden Terrace about one mile from the main campus. The coliseum was the home of the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League for two years. The facility was completed in October, 1982, at a cost of $10.7 million. The coliseum is a multi-purpose facility and is used year-around for athletic events, concerts, conventions, receptions, conferences, and various entertainment events.
In addition to the main playing arena, the coliseum contains a modern athletic training room, weight room, laundry room, eight dressing rooms for athletes and visiting entertainers, a booster club meeting room, equipment room, media room, two classrooms, 30 offices, three conference rooms, and a film review room.
The ceiling of the building rises 34 feet above the arena floor and the structure sits on pilings that extend 27-and-one-half feet below ground. The overall size of the building is 271.6 feet x 321.6 feet and covers 158,884 square feet.
In the summer of 2002 the coliseum underwent rennovations. The arena seats were replaced with all maroon chairs and the outside walls of the coliseum were covered in brick and a new canopy entrance was erected.
In the summer of 2004, the Hall of Fame displays were built in the concourse as well as a new restaurant.
Irwin Belk Track (Track & Field)
The Irwin Belk Track was dedicated Oct. 13, 2005 and is home to the Eagle track & field teams.
Eagle Field (Men's & Women's Soccer)
The Winthrop Soccer Complex is located on what is referred to as the Winthrop Farm Area, which is the home of the Eagle Athletic Department. The Stadium is located in a very scenic location across from the Winthrop Lake and at the entrance to the Winthrop Golf Course. The Complex has five fields including the main Stadium Field. During the first phase which was completed in 1997 the playing area was enclosed, the bench areas were enhanced, and the old irrigation system was replaced with a new top-of-the-line Toro sprinkler system. In the second phase completed in the Spring of 1998 lights were added to allow for night matches and other events. The Winthrop Soccer Stadium has been host to several Discoveries Soccer Club and area high school regional championship matches throughout the years. It has also been the home to the Charlotte Eagles (USL) professional team over the years. The third phase which was completed in the summer of 2001 added permanent seating, both bleacher and stadium-style chair-back seats (Refer to BUY-A-SEAT-CAMPAIGN), and a state-of-the-art press box. In this phase, a new state of the art sound system was installed and two new parking areas were added. In 2003 a message center with a new DAKTRONICS LCD scoreboard along with rotating triplex advertising panels were added. In 2005, a new field house was constructed. This facility is used by soccer and track which includes locker rooms, storage, public restrooms, concession area and a lounge area for players and club members for soccer. In the spring of 2008, 800 additional bench style seating with seat backs were added to the press box side of the field. The total seating capacity is now expanded to 1800. New dugouts from Pitch Equipment were also added to the bench areas.
Memorial Courts (Men's & Women's Tennis)
Completed in 2003, the tennis complex includes 12 lighted courts, seating for 300 and a club house with public restroom facilities, locker rooms, scoreboards, and offices. The site is adjacent to the Winthrop Ballpark, which opened in spring 2001. The 12 lighted courts were dedicated Memorial Courts in 2004 for the members of Winthrop's 1993 men's tennis team who were involved in a tragic highway accident in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
