Box Score

ASHEVILLE, NC –
The Winthrop women's tennis team advanced to its 18th conference championship match, as the top-seeded Eagles defeated fourth-seeded Radford 4-0 Friday at Asheville Racquet Club south.

The win brings Winthrop's record to 14-10 overall and a spot in the Big South Championship for the eleventh straight season.

Winthrop started the doubles round just like yesterday's match, quickly nabbing two doubles victories to clinch the point. The freshmen tandem of Ekin Gunaysu and Camille Amrani earned an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position, as junior Yasmine Alkema and sophomore Andressa Garcia followed with an 8-3 victory of their own. The Eagles have yet to drop a doubles point against a conference opponent this season.

The Eagles continued their momentum in the singles round, cruising to three straight sets victory to advance into tomorrow's final. Gunaysu continued her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Taylor Newman at the No. 5 spot. Alkema earned the third point, as the conference's player of the year tallied a 6-1, 6-0 win over Petra Dajevic at the No. 1 position.

Clinching Winthrop's win was Garcia at the No. 2 slot, capturing a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hannah Crawford.

"The girls played well in the doubles and singles today," head coach Cid Carvalho said. "We are looking forward  to the final tomorrow."

The Eagles look to return to the NCAA Championships for the fifth straight season, as they will play in the conference championship at 9 a.m. against the winner of the other semi-final, third-seeded Coastal Carolina.
