Eagles Take Game 1 Against Highlanders, 9-7

RADFORD, V.A. – A three RBI night from both Spencer Yankle and Ty Hooks lifted the Eagles over the Highlanders in Game 1 Friday night, 9-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Joe McNamara ripped a double off the first baseman's glove on the first pitch he saw, before Scout McFalls was walked on a full count to give the Eagles two baserunners with no outs.
  • Spencer Yankle hit a shot over the right field wall to give Winthrop a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
  • With two outs, Radford's Sean Cheely was caught stealing to keep the Highlander's off the board in the first.
  • Both sides got a baserunner but neither could plate any runs in the 2nd inning.
  • To lead off the 3rd inning, McNamara and McFalls strung together back-to-back singles before Ty Hooks singled to center bringing both runs home to extend Winthrop's lead, 5-0.
  • Radford got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd. With two outs and two runners on, David Bryant singles to right field, bringing home Jalen Buster who singled earlier in the inning.
  • Tyler Baker hit a two-out, solo home run in the top of the 4th inning to make it a 6-1 contest.
  • In Radford's half of the 4th inning, Will Harless walked to lead off the inning, followed by back-to-back singles off the bats of Anthony Galati and Dac Archer. Harless came home on Archer's single to short.
  • Galati came home when Garrett Matheny grounded out to third, cutting Winthrop's lead in half after four innings, 6-3.
  • McFalls led off the top of the 5th inning with a single up the first base side. He then stole second and advanced to third on a muffed throw.
  • McFalls came home when Ty Hooks singled to right field with two outs to extend Winthrop's lead, 7-3.
  • Tyler Jones walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the 5th before his night was done. Andrew Coker came in in relief and got Straton Podaras to ground into a double play before getting Connor Bagnieski to pop out and end the inning.
  • Matheny changed the course of the game with a grand slam in the bottom of the 6th to tie things up at seven.
  • The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the 7th when Andrew Jenner reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Yankle from third.
  • Parker Whittle came up big in the bottom of the 7th, after giving up a one-out walk, got the next two batters out to keep Radford off the board.
  • Winthrop got on the board once again in the top of the 8th when McNamara had a one-out double down the right field line. He advanced to third and eventually came home and back-to-back wild pitched to pull ahead, 9-7.
  • Colten Rendon came in to close out the contest, striking out two, securing the 9-7 win.

Winthrop and Radford will play two on Saturday, April 17. First pitch of Game 1 of the double header is scheduled for 1 p.m.
