Rendon Throws Complete Game, Eagles Sweep Double Header

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Eagles swept Saturday's double-header against the Longwood Lancers with a 3-2 win in Game 1 and a 7-4 victory in Game 2.
 
Winthrop was led by Colten Rendon in Game 1 who threw a complete game for the Eagles, with nine strikeouts in the win. He improves to 4-2 on the season.
 
Jonathan Strauss hit two home runs in the series finale for three RBI, tying his season-high.
 
The Eagles improve to 17-25 on the season with a 14-19 mark against conference opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Hunter Gilliam and Andrew Gorham laced back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the 2nd, with both coming home on an error later in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Ty Hooks singled in to left field with two outs in the bottom of the 5th, scoring Luke Hannum who walked earlier in the inning to cut Longwood's lead in half, 2-1.
  • Hannum was hit-by-pitch to lead off the bottom of the 7th. Scout McFalls reached in the next at-bat on an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch giving the Eagles runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.
  • Hannum came home on a wild pitch, tying things up at two.
  • McFalls later came home on an error to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Colten Rendon was absolutely dominant, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts and no earned runs.
 
GAME 2
  • Both pitchers cruised through the first three innings of play, putting up zeros.
  • Hunter Gilliam doubled down the right field line, driving in Jack Schnell to take a 1-0 lead.
  • In the top of the 5th Longwood tacked on another run off a single to left from Hayden Harris, taking a 2-0 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the 5th, Jonathan Strauss hit a solo home run in to get the Eagles on the board, 2-1.
  • In the top of the 6th the Eagles turned a triple play after the first three batters faced got on base to get out of the inning unscathed. Dalton Mims came in to pitch in relief after the first batter.
  • Harris and Schnell both drove in a run in the top of the 7th to take a 4-1 lead over the home team.
  • After Will Martin singled to lead off the Eagles' half of the inning, Strauss hit his second home run of the contest to cut Longwood's lead to just one, 4-3.
  • Winthrop tied things up off a Scout-McFalls single to right field, 4-4.
  • The Eagles took their first lead of the contest off an RBI-double off the bat of Andrew Jenner.
  • In the next at-bat Dillon Morton singled to center, bringing home Ty Hooks to take a 7-4 lead.
  • The rest of the contest would wrap up quietly and the Eagles would sweep the day with a 7-4 win in Game 2.
 
 ON DECK
The Eagles will welcome the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs to the Winthrop Ballpark on Tuesday, May 18. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Eagles and Lancers will close out the series with a double header on Saturday, May 15. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 12 p.m. with Game 2 beginning approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
