ROCK HILL, SC--The Winthrop men's and women's cross country teams placed second to Furman in the 2008 Winthrop Fall Cross Country Classic which was held Saturday morning at the Winthrop Farm course.
The men's team, led by senior Gaines Bailey, totaled 55 points to finish behind Furman's 19 points in the 6K race. Bailey turned in a time of 19:33 to finish in sixth place in the point standings and was 8th overall. Former Winthrop runner Matthew Elliott, who was running unattached finished second overall with a time of 18:50 while Furman senior Patrick Morgan captured the men's individual title with a clocking of 18:41.
Winthrop's other men's finishers and their times included: senior Ben Henderson, 12th, 20:06; freshman Adam Leroux, 14th, 20:11; freshman Johnathan Fazzary, 16th, 20:17; freshman Dustin Ubbing, 20th, 20:30; freshman Kyle Carufe, 23rd, 20:39.
Junior Casey Lyons, who was among the top 10 runners at the midway point of the run, suffered a lower left leg injury while on the course and had to be transported to the hospital.
On the women's side, Winthrop scored 62 points to finish behind Furman's 18 points. Junior Carey Phillips led the Winthrop women with a fourth place finish as she covered the 4K course in 15:17. Sophomore Carly Moss was sixth with a time of 15:19. Furman dominated the race with seven top 10 finishers, including individual champion Megan Lordi who finished in a time of 14:21.
Winthrop's other runners with their finishes and times were: junior Lisa Sickman, 20th, 16:21; junior Robin Smith, 21st, 16:26; senior Amy Rundio, 28th, 16:51; freshman Tori Koterba, 34th, 17:44.
Winthrop will return to action on Nov. 1 when it competes in the Big South Conference Championships in Lynchburg, VA.
