WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winthrop women's cross country team finished fifth in the 2009 Big South Conference Championship meet on Saturday morning while senior Brooke Spencer earned All-Big South honors and junior Carly Moss was voted the 2009 Big South Scholar-Athlete.
The Liberty Flames won team championship in the 6K event held at the Shady Oaks course in Winston-Salem The Virginia Military Institute's Hannah Granger finished first to take home Runner of the Year honors.
The Lady Eagles totaled 117 points. Liberty posted 47 points to take the title, followed by VMI (66), Coastal Carolina in third place (76), and High Point in fourth (86). In sixth was UNC Asheville (148) and in seventh was Radford (172). Gardner-Webb (225) and Charleston Southern (262) rounded out the list.
VMI's Granger finished in first with a time of 18:25 Winthrop's Spencer (Greenville, SC) finished in ninth with a time of 19:16. The top 10 finishers earned All-Conference honors.
Moss (Florence, SC), was honored as the top scholar as she has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average while majoring in human nutrition.
