WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winthrop's men finished sixth in the 2009 Big South Conference Championships held Saturday morning at the Shady Oaks course in Winston-Salem.
Liberty captured the team championship while the Flames's Samuel Chelanga finished first in the men's 8K to take home Runner of the Year honors.
Winthrop, which did not have anyone finish in the top 10, totaled 150 points. Liberty posted 33 points to nip second place High Point (46 ), Coastal Carolina took third place (59), followed by Virginia Military Institute (107) in fourth place, and UNC Asheville (133) in fifth. In seventh was Charleston Southern (199) while Gardner-Webb (225) and Radford (247) rounded out the list.
Winthrop sophomore Adam Freudenthal (Spartanburg, SC) missed All-Conference honors by two seconds as he finished 11th with a time of 26:32. Freudenthal, a business administration major, was named to the 2009 Big South All-Academic Team for men's cross country.
