Men's Golf Team Finishes Last In 12-Team Rees Jones Intercollegiate

Sease Leads Eagles With 31st Place Finish In Second Fall Tournament

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, SC—The Winthrop men’s golf team finished last in the 12-team Rees Jones Intercollegiate tournament that was completed Tuesday afternoon at the Haig Point Golf Club.

The Eagles totaled 950 strokes in the 54-hole event and finished well back of tourney champion South Carolina which ran away from the field with a 5-over par score of 869.  The Gamecocks finished 37 shots ahead of second place UNC Wilmington.

Winthrop opened play on Monday as the teams were scheduled to play 36 holes, but weather slowed play and darkness forced the completion of the second round on Tuesday followed by the final round in the par 72 event which was hosted by Michigan State.

Eagle sophomore Kyle Bearden led coach Kevin Pendley’s squad with a 18-over par score of 233 (79-81-73) to finish 31st.  One shot behind Bearden and in a tie for 34th position was freshman Brad Sill with a 234 (80-73-81).  Freshman Kamito Hirai tied for 41st place after shooting a 238 (82-79-77). Sophomore Jordan Sease tied for 55th place after finishing at 245 (80-85-80) while junior Cipriano Ayala was 60th with a 261 (85-86-90).

The Eagles return to action Oct. 18 when they travel to Savannah, GA for the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate.
