Women's Golfers Close Fall Season With 6th Place Finish At Pinehurst (11-3-09)
Senior Rachel Smith Ties For 9th Place To Lead Lady Eagles

PINEHURST, NC--The Winthrop women's golf team finished sixth out of 15 teams in the 2009 Pinehurst Fall Challenge as it closed out its fall season.
The Lady Eagles fired a team score of 303 on the final day of the 36-hole event which was played on the Par 72, 6004-yard Pinehurst #6 course. Winthrop finished with a 613 total after opening with a 310 on Monday. The College of Charleston, the host school for this event, captured the team title with an 8-over par score of 584.
Senior Rachel Smith (Mansfield, TX) led Winthrop as she tied for ninth place after finishing with a 4-over 148 (77-71). Sophomore Brittany Penny shot a 153 (77-76) to tie for 25th position. Sophomores Katie Bolling and Kayla Cline tied for 35th place at 156. Bolling opened with an 80 and shot a 76 in the final round while Cline had a 76 and 80. Rounding out the scoring for Winthrop was senior Erin Sweeney with a 164 (83-81) which placed her in a tie for 57th place.
Tournament medalist honors went to Jacksonville State's Lucia Fernandez who fired an even par 144 to take a one-shot win over Charleston's Vanessa Koechli.
Winthrop will open the spring season on Feb. 22 when it competes in the Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate on the Dunes Course.
