WAYNESVILLE, NC--Heavy rain in the mountain region of western North Carolina forced the cancellation of the final round of the Great Smokies Women's Collegiate tournament being held at the Waynesville Country Club in which the Winthrop women's golf team was one of 18 teams participating.

Winthrop women's golf team was tied for 8th place after Saturday's opening round of the scheduled 36-hole event. The Lady Eagles shot a 21-over par team score of 305 over the par 72, 5,922-yard layout in their first tournament of the 2009 fall season.  Elon and host Western Carolina were declared co-champions as they headed into Sunday's final round tied at the top of the leader board with 2-over par 286 totals. .

Senior Rachel Smith (Mansfield, TX) along with sophomores Ellie O'Brien (Charleston, SC) and Kayla Cline (Socorro, NM) led Winthrop with rounds of 76 to tie for 39th in medal play.  Freshman Danielle Dunnagan (Lexington, SC) and sophomore Brittany Penny (Peoria, AZ) shot 77 and 80, respectively, to finish tied for 48th and 83rd.
