BOONE, NC--Seniors Ashley Howard and Sasha Robinson claimed first place finishes to lead six Winthrop women's and men's track and field athletes with top three performances at the Appalachian State Indoor Invitational.
Howard (Wilmington, OH) easily won the women's weight throw event with a toss of 17.04 meters. That distance was two and a half meters better than her closest competitor. Robinson (Norris, SC) breezed to a first place finish in the women's 400 meter dash with a clocking of 58.93 seconds.
Junior distance runner Carey Phillips (Chesnee, SC) finished second in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 47.34 seconds, and senior Amami Antia-Obong claimed third the third spot in the 200 meter dash as she was clocked at 26.06 seconds.
The men were led by junior Keary Simms (Fort Pierce, FL) who finished second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.67 seconds. Simms won his preliminary heat to advance to the finals. Also on the men's side, sophomore Dexter Young (Stephen, SC) finished third in the high jump with a leap of 1.99 meters.
Winthrop will be back in action next weekend when it travels to Johnson City, TN to participate in the two-day Niswonger Invitational at East Tennessee State.
