KIAWAH ISLAND, SC—The Winthrop women’s golf team opened the 2010 spring season with a 29th place finish at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic that was played on the Cougar Point and Oak Point courses at Kiawah Island.
The Lady Eagles, who played on the Oak Point course, shot a 54-hole total score of 987 (327-327-333) as they finished 95 shots behind tournament champion Miami’s three-day total of 892. Winthrop senior Rachel Smith (Mansfield, TX) was the top finisher for the Lady Eagles as she shot a 54-hole score of 237 (83-77-77) which tied her for 81st out of 169 golfers in the medalist competition.
Winthrop’s other golfers were Allison Itria, tied for 146th at 251 (84-80-87); Kayla Cline, tied for 149th with a 252 (81-84-87); Katie Keiser, tied with Cline at 149th with a 252 (82-86-84); and Danielle Dunnagan finished in a tie for 152nd with a 256 (81-90-85).
Nina Muehl and Crystal Reeves tied for first place as they finished at 3-under-par 213. Muehl won medalist honors by virtue of a tie breaker.
Winthrop will be back in action on March 1-2 when it travels to Mobile, AL for the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational.
