Winthrop Men Finish 6th While Women Claim 5th Place At 2010 Big South Indoor Championships

CLEMSON, SC--The Winthrop women finished fifth while the men's team claimed sixth place at the 2010 Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held this past weekend at the Clemson Indoor Track Facility.

Winthrop captured two Big South championships, nine All-Conference honors and broke six school records.

Liberty captured both the men's and women's team championships as the men won their 13th-straight crown while the Lady Flames notched their first Indoor Track and Field crown since 2005.

Winthrop senior Ashley Howard (Wilmington, OH) captured the Big South title in the women's shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 10 inches and finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 55 feet, 3.75 inches.  The men's team was led by the championship performance of junior Keary Simms (Ft. Pierce, FL) who took the title in the men's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.14 seconds.  He also had a third place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 9 inches.

The Winthrop women's 4x400 meter relay team finished second as the foursome of Monique James, Amami Antia-Obong, Latasha Watson and Sasha Robinson set a new school record with a time of 5:53.44.  Rebecca Holmes captured third place in the 60 meter hurdles as she set a new school record with a time of 8:78 seconds.  Antia-Obong claimed third place in the women's pentathlon and set a new school record.

In addition to Simms' performances, the men's team got a second place finish by Travis Coleman in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 4.75 inches which was good for a new school record.  Dexter Young claimed third place in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6.75 inches.

Antia-Obong and Adam Freudenthal were named to the 2010 Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team.  The complete list of individual award winners is as follows:
