Cole, Lyons Earn Big South Awards (3-11-10)

Cole Named To First Team All-Big South

HIGH POINT, NC— Winthrop gets two awards as the 2010 Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Awards were announced Thursday evening.

Senior Shanice Cole earned All-Big South First Team honors as she led Winthrop with a 12.2 scoring average and 6.9 rebounding mark. The 5-10 guard out of Richmond, VA started in all 30 games and also led the team in assists with 77. In the Big South, Cole was ninth in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage, ninth in free throw percentage, fifth in rebounding, eighth in assists, sixth in offensive rebounds and ninth in defensive rebounds.

Cole had five 20-point performances, including a career-high 24 points to lead Winthrop to a 56-50 victory over High Point on Feb. 27, 2010. She becomes just the seventh different player in school history to be named to the All-Big South First Team. It’s the third straight year a Winthrop player has been named to the first team. The only other time that happened in school history it came from the same player as Kim Segars made it in 1987, 1988 and 1989. She was joined on the first team by Margaret Roundtree and Dominique Hudson of Gardner-Webb and Devon Brown and Avery Warley of Liberty.

Junior Lacey Lyons was named to the All-Academic Team. Lyons averaged 4.7 points while shooting 41 percent from the field and 36 percent from three. She moved into 15th place all-time in three-point field goals made in the Big South after going 3-for-7 at Charleston Southern on Monday, March 8.

Winthrop will face third-seeded High Point in the quarter-finals of the Big South Conference Tournament on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Millis Center on the campus of High Point University.
