ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop's Shanice Cole has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week after her performances against High Point and Coastal Carolina.
The senior guard out of Richmond, VA averaged 21.5 points per game and shot 58 percent from the field to lead Winthrop to a perfect 2-0 week.
Senior Day was Saturday and Cole made the most of it by pouring in a career-high 24 points to lead Winthrop to a 56-50 victory over third place High Point. Cole also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals. She was 10-for-19 from the field and 4-for-7 from the foul line.
Against Coastal Carolina on Monday, Cole led all scorers with 19 points to help Winthrop to a 47-39 victory. Cole also had six rebounds, four assists, three steals and tied a career-high with two blocks. She was 8-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the foul line. It was the seventh time she has shot 60 percent or better in a single game and scored double-figures. It's the 14th game in which she's shot 50 percent or better.
It's the first time Cole has earned the weekly honor and the first Lady Eagle to do so since Ashley Fann got the award the final week of the 2008-09 season (March 9).
