CHARLOTTE, NC--Junior Sasha Robinson continues her assault on the Winthrop record books with her third straight record breaking performance in as many meets as Winthrop competed in the UNC Charlotte 49er Classic this weekend against more than 20 teams.
Robinson ran a blistering 55.17 in the 400 meter dash to claim third place and lower her previous best of 56 .02 set two weeks ago. Robinson was not done however as she teamed up with Monique James, Latasha Watson and Amami Antia-Obong to eclipse more than three seconds off the 4 x 400m relay record with a time of 3:48.8 to claim second place.
Senior thrower Ashley Howard claimed yet another school record, this time in the hammer throw with a toss of 162-feet,10-inches for fourth place in the event breaking the old record by more than 18 feet. Seniors Rebecca Holmes and Amami Antia Obong continued to sizzle on the track as both claimed spots in the highly contested finals. Holmes finished fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.35 seconds) and sixth in the 100 meter dash (12.25 seconds). Obong finished seventh in the 200 meters in 25.06 seconds.
Dexter Young and Jared Baird led the men's team with second place finishes. Young had a leap of 6-feet, 7 inches in the high jump while Baird threw the javelin a distance of 198-feet, 10-inches.
"The women are looking incredible right now. This was a tough field and to make finals and perform on this stage is huge heading in to the championship part of our season. Sasha continues to rewrite the record books and with her teammates. They might be one of the top relays in the East by track season's end" Coach Ben Paxton
The Eagles will be at home next week for the Asics/Winthrop Invitational. The meet will draw over 20 teams and will start competition on Thursday afternoon. Admission is free with trials on Friday evening and Finals on Saturday at noon.
