NINETY-SIX, SC--Winthrop sophomore Kayla Cline fired a 71 during the second round of the 2010 Big South Conference Golf Championships and trails the tournament leader by only one shot heading into Wednesday's final round at The Patriot Golf Club.
With Cline and senior Rachel Smith leading the charge, the Lady Eagles trimmed 18 strokes off their opening day score to shoot a 295 team score and move into third place in the standings with a 608 total (313-295). The 295 was three shots off the school's 18-hole record.
Cline (Socorro, NM) stands at 145 (74-71) and in a three-way tie for second place after 36 holes on the par 72, 5,956-yard layout. The foursome trails Bucknell's Minjoo Lee in the medalist competition. Smith (Mansfield, TX) is only five shots behind the leader at 149 after shooting a 73 on Tuesday to go along with an opening round of 76.
Charleston Southern holds the team lead by 14 shots over second place Coastal Carolina. The Lady Buccaneers opened with a 294 on Monday and followed that with a 296 on Tuesday to stand at 590.
Bucknell, an associate conference member in women's golf, is tied for fourth with Radford at 613. Gardner-Webb in sixth at 624, followed by Presbyterian in seventh place (628), High Point in eighth (641) and Holy Cross, another associate member, in tenth (682).
