CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winthrop women’s tennis team defeated the Charlotte 49ers 7-0 on Wednesday at Charlotte, NC.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 12-8 (5-1) on the season.
Winthrop started ahead on the scoreboard as it won the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, Yasmine Alkema and Lisa Wilkinson beat Alexandra Zinn and Ana Spivakovsky 8-4, while Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portiolli defeated Anna Ekelund and Gabi Vergara 8-5 in the No. 2 doubles match.
In singles play, Winthrop continued strong as it captured all six matches without dropping a single set. In the No. 1 singles match, Alkema beat Zinn 6-0, 6-0, while Herrera defeated Andrea Rivera 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match. In the No. 3 singles match, Portiolli beat Kimber Redfern 6-3, 6-2, while Wilkinson beat defeated Vergara 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match. In the No. 5 singles match, Paula Pereira defeated Candace Cunningham 6-0, 6-3, while Abutovic beat Iveta Guneva 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles match.
“The girls played well from the beginning to the end of the match,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “Hopefully, we can keep up playing well on Saturday for our last regular season match at Liberty.”
The Lady Eagles will be back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday as they travel to Lynchburg, VA, to play Liberty.
