Tennis Teams Capture Big South Freshmen Of The Week
Portiolli And Levy Are The Conference's Freshmen Of The Week For The Second Week In A Row

CHARLOTTE, NC Winthrop won the two Big South weekly tennis awards for freshmen this week, the conference announced today. Liran Levy and Giovanna Portiolli have been named The Crons Brand Freshmen of the Week for the second week in a row.

 

Levy finished the regular season with a 5-1 in singles record in conference play. Last week, he won his no. 3 singles match against Liberty and helped Winthrop guarantee its no. 2 seed in the conference tournament, which will begin Thursday.

 

Portiolli won her two singles matches last week without losing a set. Two of the four sets she played last week, she did not lose a single game. Portiolli also finished the regular season with a 6-1 singles record. She is on a seven-match winning streak in singles. In doubles, Portiolli and her partner Sandra Herrera also won the two matches they played last week. They also finished the season unbeaten in conference play after their win over Liberty's duo Carol Lobel and Nadia Solomon-Burgess. They are on a 14-match winning streak.

 

Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Thursday as they head to Radford, VA, to play the Big South tournament. The men's team will face no. 7 seed Presbyterian College at 1 p.m., while the no. 2 seed Lady Eagles will play no. 7 seed Liberty at noon.
