NINETY SIX, SC--The Winthrop men's golf team bounced back on the final day of the 2010 Big South Conference Golf Championships to shoot its best round of the tournament, but it was only good enough to finish fourth.
The Eagles fired a 287 on Wednesday at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor near Ninety Six, SC, and finished the 54-hole event with a total score of 886 (291-308-287). Winthrop had a roller coaster performance over the three-day tournament as the Eagles had the second best score in the opening round, followed by the highest score in round two, and finished with the third best score on the final day.
Top-seeded Coastal Carolina won the championship for the seventh straight year as the Chanticleers finished at 868 (286-290-292) which was four shots better than second place Charleston Southern (298-286-288, 872). Liberty moved up to third after turning in the best score of 271 on Wednesday to finish at 873 (304-288-281).
Winthrop was followed by High Point in fifth place (890), Gardner-Webb in sixth (897) while Radford and Presbyterian College tied for seventh (907).
The Eagles were led by freshman Kamito Hirai who tied for fourth place at 217 (71-73-73) and earned a spot on the All-Big South Conference Team. Sophomore Kyle Bearden also had a top 10 finish as he scored 220 (73-73-72). Sophomore Jordan Sease came back to shoot a 1-under par 71 after opening with a 70 on Monday and falling to 81 on Tuesday. He tied for 15th place with a 222. Freshman Brad Sill also bounced back to shoot 1-under par 71 after struggling with an 82 on Tuesday. He tied for 26th place at 228. Rounding out Winthrop's players were red-shirt freshman Cameron Bell in 35th place with a 236. He finished with his best round of 73 after shooting 82 and 81.
Liberty's Robert Karlsson claimed medalist honors as he fired a 66 on the final day and finished with a 7-under 209. He won the title by two shots over Charleston Southern's Kelvin Day.
