The Lady Eagles Will Be Back In Action At 12 p.m. Tomorrow
RADFORD, VA – The Winthrop women’s tennis team won the first round of the Big South Championship as it beat the Liberty Flames 4-0 on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, Winthrop improves to 14-8 (7-1) on the season.
The Eagles captured the doubles point as they won two of the three matches. In the no. 2 doubles match, the All-Conference duo Giovanna Portiolli and Sandra Herrera beat Nadia Solomon-Burgess and Carol Lobel 8-3, while Sara Abutovic and Lisa Wilkinson defeated Brittany Thomas and Fabiana Gouveia 8-2 in the no. 3 doubles match. The All-Conference duo Elizaveta Zaytseva and Yasmine Alkema did not finish their no. 1 doubles match.
In singles play, Paula Pereira gave Winthrop its second point as she beat Thomas 6-1, 6-0 in the no. 6 singles match, while Portiolli defeated Gouveia 6-0, 6-0 in the no. 4 singles match to put the Eagles 3-0 ahead. The clincher came with Herrera at no. 3 singles match as she beat Lobel 6-1 6-0.
“The girls played well today,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “It was good to get the first round out of the way. We are looking forward to play the semifinals tomorrow at noon.”
The Eagles will face the winner of the match between Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb in the semifinals of the conference tournament at noon on Friday in Radford, VA.
