The Eagles Will Play Charleston Southern Tomorrow At 9 A.M.
RADFORD, VA – The Winthrop women's tennis team is on the final of the Big South Championship as it defeated Coastal Carolina 4-3 on Friday in Radford, VA.
With the win, Winthrop improves to 15-8 (8-1) on the season.
The Eagles captured the doubles point as they won two of the three matches. In the no. 1 doubles match, the All-Conference duo Yasmine Alkema and Elizaveta Zaytseva defeated Lexi Bolesky and Miki Bunea 8-6, while the All-Conference duo Giovanna Portiolli and Sandra Herrera beat Paty Cortes and Mary Hill 8-6 in the no. 2 doubles match.
In singles play, with wins at no. 1 and 3, Winthrop opened the 3-0 lead over Coastal Carolina. In the no. 1 singles match, Alkema beat Bolesky 6-1, 6-3, while Herrera defeated Kim Webb 6-2, 6-0 in the no. 3 singles match. Coastal tied the dual match to 3-3 as it won the no. 2, 4 and 6 singles matches. In the no. 2 singles match, Zaytseva lost to Bunea 7-6, 6-3, while Portiolli dropped to Cortes 6-4, 6-3 in the no. 4 singles match. In the no. 6 singles match, Paula Pereira lost to Hill 6-3, 6-2. The clincher came in the no. 5 singles match as Lisa Wilkinson came back from one set down to beat Maria Camberos 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"We played the doubles well. We won a very important double point," said head coach Cid Carvalho. "In singles, Yasmine and Sandra played well, and Lisa clinched the match by winning the fourth point. Coastal played a very tough match. It was very difficult for us. We are very happy to be in the finals tomorrow."
The Eagles will face Charleston Southern in the finals of the Big South Championship at 9 a.m. Saturday in Radford, VA.
