Women's Tennis Captures Its 13th Big South Title (4-24-10)

The Lady Eagles Will Now Play the NCAA Championship In May

RADFORD, VA The Winthrop women’s tennis team captured the Big South Championship title for the 13th time as it beat Charleston Southern 4-0 on Saturday at Radford, VA.

 

With the win, Winthrop improves to 16-8 on the season and makes it to the NCAA tournament for the third time in row.

 

The Eagles started strong as they captured the doubles point. In the no. 1 doubles match, the All-Conference duo Yasmine Alkema and Elizaveta Zaytseva defeated Andrea Schutte and Angie Torres 8-4, while Lisa Wilkinson and Sara Abutovic defeated Susita Das and Brooke Pletcher 8-5 in the no. 3 doubles match.

 

In singles play, Winthrop continued strong as it captured three straight-set wins over the Buccaneers. In the no. 5 singles match, Wilkinson did not have problems defeating Das 6-0, 6-0, while Sandra Herrera beat Marija Dzakovic 6-1, 6-0 in the no. 3 singles match. The clincher came in the no. 1 singles match as Alkema beat Olga Makhova 6-2, 6-2.

 

“I’m very proud of my girls. They played extremely well in doubles today and followed by a very strong performance in singles," head coach Cid Carvalho said. "Yasmine, Sandra and Lisa won their singles matches to give us the title.”

 

The Eagles advance to the 2010 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships, which begin on May 14. To find out whom Winthrop will face in the first round, check winthropeagles.com soon.
