Chapman Extends Hit Streak To Seven Games

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop and Coastal Carolina split a doubleheader Saturday evening in Big South Conference softball action as Winthrop won the first game 10-2 while Coastal Carolina took the nightcap 3-1.

Winthrop is now 25-24 overall on the year and 8-9 in the Big South while Coastal Carolina is 24-26 overall and 5-9 in the league.

The Lady Eagles used an eight-run sixth inning to capture the first game. Coastal Carolina took the lead in the first inning only to have Winthrop tie it in the bottom half of the first. In the third inning the Chanticleers took the lead 2-1, but again Winthrop came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. However the bats exploded in the sixth inning.

The big hits in the sixth came from Megan Chapman with an RBI single and a bases clearing double by Taylor Wright. Megan Evans followed with an RBI single and then Ashlee Revell blasted a two-run home run to center for a 9-2 lead.

Jazmin Daigle had an RBI double in the first and provided the run in the third with another RBI double.  

Cari Wooldridge tossed a complete game allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts to improve to 14-12 on the year. Ashley Frederick suffered the loss and is now 13-15 after she allowed seven runs on six hits with seven walks and two strikeouts.

In the second game, Coastal Carolina scored three runs in the fifth inning and that was enough to earn the win.

Mecaela Ballard made it 1-0 with an RBI single followed by a triple to right by Ashley Pisone to make it 2-0. Sarah Maples added some insurance with an RBI single to short.

Winthrop made it 3-1 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to left as Chelsey Schoenfeldt lined out to left field with the bases loaded. The Lady Eagles were unable to get any more across and ended up stranding a total of nine base runners in the game.

Chapman had two hits in game one and another in the second to extend her hitting streak to seven games.

The two teams will wrap-up the three game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
