Women's Tennis Team Accepts Bid To Open 2011 Season In ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend

ROCK HILL, SC--The Winthrop women's tennis team will be one of 60 teams from across the country who have accepted offers to participate in the 2011 ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend, Jan. 29-30, which will be held at 15 regional sites.

The Lady Eagles, two-time defending Big South Conference champions who were ranked as high as 58th this past season and finished the year at No. 64, will face the College of William & Mary at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, on the University of Florida outdoor courts.  Florida will face the College of Charleston at 10 a.m.  The winners will meet on Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. following the 10 a.m. consolation match.  

Each of the 15 regional winners will earn a trip to Charlottesville, VA, where they will compete for the 2011 ITA Team Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

"It is an honor for our program to participate in the ITA Kick-Off weekend at University of Florida," said Winthrop head coach Cid Carvalho. "It will be a great way to start the spring season and, we are looking forward to it."

Winthrop will return six of its top seven players from last year's team that finished the year at 16-9 overall and 6-1 in the Big South Conference.

The Lady Eagles and College of Charleston will be joined by Clemson and South Carolina in the event.  The other 14 host sites include: Stanford, Notre Dame, Duke, Tennessee, UCLA, Miami, Florida State, North Carolina, Northwestern, Clemson, and Georgia Tech.
