ROCK HILL, SC--After three weeks of training in hot August weather, the Winthrop men's and women's cross country teams travel to Cullowhee, NC on Friday to compete in the Western Carolina Invitational. Both teams will run a distance of 5 kilometers.
Winthrop Head Coach Ben Paxton will have a more experienced men's squad than a year ago even though the team does not include a senior. Three juniors, led by the team's top returning runner Adam Freudenthal, will lead the way for the Eagles. The other two juniors include Kyle Carufe and Johnathan Fazzary. Winthrop's men will also get a boost with the return of sophomore Adam Leroux who received a medical red-shirt in 2009. Paxton will also count on sophomores AJ Fitzsimmons and Ted Nisbett who now have a full year of experience under their belts. The roster also includes four new freshmen, Drew Harris, Gabe Holguin, Steve Rivard and Zach Parker.
The women's squad will be young as four freshmen will join a roster that returns two seniors, Carly Moss and Megan Fulks, junior Tori Koterba and sophomore Jen Schofield.
After competing at Western Carolina, Winthrop will take a week off before returning home to host the Asics Winthrop Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Winthrop Lake Course. That event will be one of two home meets this fall. Winthrop will also host the Asics Fall Classic on Oct. 16.
" We are very excited about our schedule this fall," says Paxton, who is beginning his 17th year as the Winthrop head coach. " With a very young team, we are staying close to home which will help mature a young women's team and season an emerging men's team. The two home meets will give our supporters an excellent opportunity to see us compete"
