#28 San Diego Rallies For 7-5 Victory Over Winthrop

Lake Allows Two Runs Over Six Innings Of Work

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, CA –
The 28th-ranked San Diego Toreros scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Winthrop Eagles 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.

The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Toreros improve to 1-1 overall.

“We actually competed in all nine innings today,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “We didn't swing the bats extremely well, struck out nine times and left some guys stranded at third base with less than two outs. We have to be a little bit better than that and learn how to pitch with the lead.”

James Pazos (1-0) earned the victory on the mound in relief tossing a scoreless 0.1 inning and struck out one batter. Matt Pierpont (0-1) took the loss for Winthrop throwing 0.1 inning and gave up three runs on two hits and one walk.

Eagle starter Robert Lake pitched 6.0 innings and surrendered only two runs on nine hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

“Robert pitched really well,” Riginos said. “He gave us a chance to win today. We had a lead going into the eighth inning and that's all you can ask for.”

Winthrop was able to take advantage of some situational hitting in the third inning as Sean Sullivan and Cam Walters both drove in runs to give it a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Sullivan drove in the first run of the game with one out as he drove in Matt Lobacz with an RBI double down the left field line. Walters followed two batters later with a two RBI single over the head of Kris Bryant at third base that brought in Sullivan and Brett Thomas.

San Diego answered back with one run in the bottom of the third on a solo home run to left field by Bryant.

Winthrop also responded in its half of the fourth as Max Vogel drove in Eddie Rohan with his RBI single to right field before the Toreros made it a 4-2 contest in the fifth on Bryant's RBI double to left field which scored Kevin Muno.

San Diego cut the Eagles lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh after Muno scored on a wild pitch by reliever Wade Newman, but Winthrop would score a run of its own in the top of the eighth on Sullivan's RBI infield single.

The Toreros took the lead at 7-5 in their half of the eighth highlighted by a two RBI double down the left field line by Bryan Haar after Zach Kometani posted an RBI double of his own to left field bringing in the first run of the inning. Muno followed the double by Haar with an RBI suicide squeeze that allowed to Haar to score from third base.

Sullivan led Winthrop at plate with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBI, while Walters also had two RBI on one hit. Kometani and Austin Green had three hits each for San Diego, while Bryant and Haar recorded two RBI apiece.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20 as they will face the San Diego Aztecs at Tony Gwynn Stadium. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. EST. Winthrop defeated the Aztecs 14-9 on Friday afternoon in the season opener.
