Baseball Hits Road For Final Time In Regular Season Tuesday Night At Charlotte

Eagles Fell 4-3 To 49ers In First Meeting This Season On Apr. 26

The Winthrop baseball team will hit the road for the final time in the 2011 regular season on Tuesday evening against the Charlotte 49ers at Hayes Stadium.

The Eagles enter the midweek contest with a 25-27 overall record after picking up a series victory in Big South play against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Winthrop won two out of three from the Chanticleers. The 49ers are currently 38-12 on the season and play in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Charlotte leads the all-time series over the Eagles 14-12-1 and 9-4 when playing in Charlotte. The 49ers, ranked 25th in the country at the time, won the first meeting against Winthrop on Apr. 26 in Rock Hill 4-3. Charlotte won the only meeting between the two teams 16-5 on Apr. 14, 2010 in Charlotte. The Eagles last won a game in this series on Apr. 21, 2009 when they picked up a 7-2 victory at Hayes Stadium.

Winthrop is led offensively by Eddie Rohan with a .340 average, five home runs and 38 RBI. He also holds the team lead with 96 total bases, .495 slugging percentage and .443 on-base percentage. Patrick Gamblin leads the Eagles with 17 doubles and 14 stolen bases on the season, while Adam Gliebe has three triples on the season.

Eric Ruth tops the Winthrop pitching staff with a 6-1 record on the mound, with all six of his wins coming in relief appearances. He also leads the staff with 22 appearances on the season. Mitchell Knox posts a team-low 3.41 ERA in 37.0 innings pitched, while Tyler Mizenko leads all Eagle starters with a 3.72 ERA and .255 opposing average. Robert Lake has tossed a team-high 80.1 innings on the season, and Matteo D'Angelo has surrendered only 10 walks in 72.1 innings of work.

The 49ers are coached by Loren Hibbs, who is in his 19th season with the program. The Charlotte offense is led by Ross Steedley with a .338 average at the plate. Corey Shaylor posts a team-high five home runs on the season, while Cory Tilton has 41 RBI. Justin Wilson leads Charlotte with 84 total bases. Tilton has a team-leading 30 stolen bases, Steedley with a .449 slugging percentage and Shane Basen a .433 on-base percentage.

The pitching staff is led by Andrew Smith and Tyler Barnette with eight wins each on the season, while Smith has a team-low 1.70 ERA in 90.0 innings pitched. Corey Roberts' .192 opposing average is currently the lowest on the team and has three complete games.

In the first meeting back on Apr. 26 in Rock Hill, Joe Yermal earned the win for the 49ers pitching 6.0 innings and gave up two runs (none earned) on four hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Matt Pierpont took the loss surrendering four runs on 10 hits, two walks and non strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.

Rohan had two hits and one RBI to lead the Eagles, while Tilton recorded three hits.

Winthrop will wrap up its 2011 regular season May 19-21 with a three-game home conference series against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. Game times for the series are Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m.
