Tyler Mizenko Selected By San Francisco Giants In 28th Round Of 2011 MLB Draft

Mizenko Becomes Second Eagle Player Drafted By Giants

ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop right-handed pitcher Tyler Mizenko has been selected by the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants in the 28th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

The junior from Wallingford, CT was the 867th overall pick by the Giants and 25th selection of the 28th round. He becomes the 24th Winthrop player to be drafted and second to be selected by San Francisco. The last Eagle to be drafted by the Giants was outfielder Jim Malseed in the 33rd round (844th pick) of the 1987 draft. Malseed was the first Winthrop player to be drafted into the major leagues.

“It's an honor for Tyler to be drafted by the San Francisco Giants,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “It is a testament for all of the hard work that he has put in for the last three seasons, and I am proud and happy for him.”

Mizenko was named Second Team All-Big South for the second time in his career this season after posting a 5-3 record and 3.79 ERA in a team-high 90.1 innings pitched, and fifth in the conference, during his first full season as a starting pitcher. He had a team-low .251 opposing average and earned his first career Big South Pitcher of the Week honors on May 23. Mizenko also ranked in the top 10 for the Big South in strikeouts, games started and least home runs allowed.

He tied his career-high of eight strikeouts on May 19 against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in which he also tied a career-best of 8.0 innings pitched. Mizenko also tossed 8.0 innings against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Mar. 4.

Mizenko is the first Eagle pitcher selected in the Major League Draft since Heath Rollins was picked by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round of the 2006 draft.

The final day of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft will begin at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8 and consist of rounds 31-50.
