Baseball Falls In Big South Opener To Campbell 8-0

Eagles Manage Five Hits In Conference Opener To Camels

ROCK HILL, SC –
Campbell starting pitcher Matt Sergey tossed a complete game shutout on Friday evening as the Camels defeated the Winthrop Eagles 8-0 at The Winthrop Ballpark in the first Big South Conference game for each team.

The Eagles fall to 6-17 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while Campbell improves to 21-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Sergey (3-0) allowed just five hits on one walk and six strikeouts, while Matt Pierpont (2-4) suffered the loss giving up six runs on nine hits, one walk and five strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.

The Camels jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the fourth inning as they scored two runs each in the first and fourth innings. Jake Kirkland plated both runs in the first on his two RBI single to center field scoring Jimmy Brenneman and Ben McQuown. Brenneman led off the game with a double to right field, and McQuown followed with a bunt single to first. Kyle Holmstrom was responsible for both runs in the fourth with his two-run homer off Pierpont to left field. It was Holmstrom's second home run of the season.

Campbell recorded one run apiece in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to add to its lead at 6-0. McQuown posted an RBI single in the sixth and Bryce Grady drove in Michael Felton on his RBI sacrifice fly to left field in the seventh.

The Camels made it an 8-0 contest in the top of the ninth on David Olson's RBI single to left field, and Kurt Odom later scored on a passed ball. Odom came in to the game to pinch-run for Olson after his RBI single.

Jason Driver, Chas Crane, Clay Altman, Jace Whitley and Leighton Daniels had one hit apiece for Winthrop, while four Campbell hitters collected two hits each. Kirkland and Holmstrom drove in two runs each for the Camels.

The Eagles will wrap up their three-game series with Campbell on Saturday, Mar. 24 with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
