ROCK HILL, SC--Freshman discus thrower
Mark Britton and senior pole vaulter
Tara Bowman set new Winthrop records, the women's team captured the team title and seven individuals claimed first place finishes for the Eagle men and women to highlight the 2012 Carolina Cup on Friday night at the Irwin Belk Track.
Britton threw the discus 50.40 meters to break the previous school mark of 48.85 held by senior teammate
Billy Pearce. Bowman broke her own school mark in the pole vault as she reached a height of 3.60 meters while taking second place in the event.
In the team scoring, the Winthrop women finished strong to edge Savannah State 148-118. On the men's side, Radford won the team title over second place Winthrop 137-111.
In addition to Britton's first place finish in the discus, seniors
Dexter Young and
Adam Leroux also won events for the men's squad. Young had a leap of 2.0 meters to capture the high jump while senior
Adam Leroux won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:51.37 as he came up just short in his bid to set a new school record.
In the women's competition, Sophomore
Sharrone Honor continued her strong performances in the 100 meter Hurdles by finishing first with a time of 14.29 seconds. Sophomore
Shayna Jenkins claimed the 1500 meters with 4:48.06. Freshman
Jessica Whitmire won the 3000 meters with a clocking of 10:23.75 as she narrowly defeated sophomore teammate
Jeanne Stroud who finished at 10:24.15. Freshman steeplechase performer
Tristan Langley won the 2000 meter steeple in 7:26.32.
The Winthrop women also produced three other second place finishers with freshman
Shalace Rose taking second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.84, freshman
Shaniqua Hunter, second in the hammer with a throw of 49.35 meters, and
Lisa Nichols in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.85.
