ROCK HILL, SC – The Wake Forest Demon Deacons scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday evening as it defeated the Winthrop Eagles 5-2 in non-conference action at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles fall to 13-29 on the season, while the Demon Deacons improve to 26-16 overall.
Jack Fischer (3-3) earned the win in relief tossing one-third of an inning and did not allow a run or hit on no walks and no strikeouts.
Tyler Klitsch (2-5) took the loss pitching 2.2 innings of relief and gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit, one walk and no strikeouts. Michael Dimock (10) picked up the save pitching one scoreless inning on two hits, no walks and no strikeouts.
Mark Rhine led off the top of the ninth for Wake Forest reaching on a Winthrop error, and scored the go-ahead run two batters later when Jack Carey hit an RBI double into the left center field gap with one out. The double by Carey put the Demon Deacons in front 3-2 at the time, and would go ahead 5-2 later in the inning on an RBI single by Pat Blair and Evans Stephens scoring on Winthrop's second error of the inning.
Kevin Jordan gave Wake Forest a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with his two RBI double to center field against Eagle starter
Austin Stuart, but Winthrop then tied the game at 2-2 after scoring one run each in the second and fifth innings.
Leighton Daniels gave the Eagles their first run of the contest with his RBI single to center field in the bottom of the second, while
Jason Driver made it a tied ballgame in the fifth on his RBI sacrifice fly to left field.
Rhine led the Demon Deacons offensively with two hits in the contest, and Jordan drove in a team-high two RBI.
Patrick Gamblin and
Chas Crane posted two hits each for Winthrop, while Driver and Daniels drove in both runs.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, May 2 as they travel to Chapel Hill, NC to face the North Carolina Tar Heels at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
