ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop head volleyball coach Julie Torbett has announced that Cindi Miller, a two-time first team All-Big South Conference player at UNC Asheville, is joining the Eagle program as an assistant coach.
Torbett says Miller will work primarily with the Eagle outside hitters. She joins assistant coach Chuck Rey on Torbett's staff and replaces Mary Hock Leventis who will transition into a volunteer coach and camp director position.
Miller, who played for Torbett on the UNC Asheville team from 2008 - 2010 and was a coach at Biltmore Volleyball Academy for the past three seasons. She has also worked with camps and clinics under Coach Torbett.
"I'm really excited to have Cindi in Rock Hill" Torbett said. " I recruited her as a high school junior, so I've known her a long time. She knows how I want to train and she can explain to the girls what I'm thinking and how to play for me. Competitive drive, loyalty and work ethic are embedded in her thought process."
Miller says she is very excited to join the Winthrop volleyball staff and eager for the season to get underway. “The opportunity to learn from two very experienced and knowledgeable coaches will be invaluable. I look forward in continuing to learn from Coach Torbett as I begin my collegiate coaching career. The lessons she taught me and demonstrated as my coach at Asheville will certainly continue to be implemented into my job now at Winthrop.” Miller said.
A native of Decatur, Indiana, Miller was a standout athlete in high school and had a stellar career in the Big South Conference. During her Belmont H.S. career, Miller was a PrepVolleyball All-American,
earned All-conference honors for three consecutive years, and was MVP and first team All-State as a senior while leading her team in kills and blocks as senior. She also lettered four years in basketball and track and was named a first team in basketball for three years.
After being recruited by Torbett to play at UNC Asheville, Miller began her career by being voted to the Big South Conference All-Freshman Team. She was a preseason All-Big South selection as a senior and was a first team All-Big South performer as a junior and senior. She finished her career with 1,436 kills which ranks her seventh on the UNC Asheville career list. She also notched 870 career digs.
Miller graduated from Asheville in May with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology.
