ROCK HILL, SC--Former Winthrop outfielder Daniel Carte, who is currently serving as the
West Virginia University baseball volunteer assistant, was inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame this past Saturday night in Chatham, MA.
A native of Hurricane, W.Va., Carte recovered from a slow start for Falmouth in 2004 to become the league's Most Valuable Player. He batted .308 and led the league in home runs (11), RBIs (38), slugging percentage (.560) and extra-base hits (17).
Carte helped lead Falmouth to the league championship and was later named the Summer League Player of the Year by Baseball America. He previously was named the MVP of the Great Lakes League.
Following his junior year, Carte was selected in second round of 2005 Major League Draft as the 52nd overall pick by the Colorado Rockies and played six seasons in the minors, hitting .272 with 61 homers, 115 doubles and 316 RBIs.
Carte's three-year Winthrop career spanned from 2003 to 2005. He finished with a .341 batting average, 42 home runs (ranks 3rd on Winthrop career list), and 182 RBI (ranks 6th on Winthrop career list).
The Cape Cod League has been considered the premier amateur baseball league in the nation since 1885. Its season begins each June and features a 44-game regular-season schedule and a postseason made up of a best-of-three quarterfinal, semifinal and championship series.
