ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team travels to Charleston on Wednesday to take on The Citadel Bulldogs at Riley Park in a 6 p.m. contest.
Wednesday night's game will mark the 43rd all-time meeting between the two schools. Winthrop and The Citadel look to get the edge as the series is locked at 21-21.
The Eagles (1-1) are looking to get back in the win column against the Bulldogs by building on solid offensive and defensive performances from the past weekend against Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Winthrop will face a Bulldog team that comes into the game with a 2-1 record with wins against George Mason and Kansas State and a loss to High Point. The Citadel currently has six players hitting over .300 the pitching staff has an impressive 2.67 ERA.
In first two games this season, Winthrop pitchers have combined for a 2.84 ERA and 29 strikeouts. Offensively,
Leighton Daniels,
Clay Altman, and
Matt Lobacz are off to strong starts, combining for a total of 10 hits. Altman already has three hits, nearly equaling his entire output last year when he compiled four hits in 29 plate appearances.
Freshman right-hander Joey Strain (0-1) will get his first collegiate start. He came on in relief last Sunday and. Strain pitched 1 and 2/3 innings giving up one run on three hits and striking out two.
Following Wednesday night's game in Charleston, Winthrop will return home to face Delaware State at 6 p.m. on Thursday at The Winthrop Ballpark. Admission will be free for this contest that was added to the schedule on Monday. Delaware State and Winthrop will also tangle again on Friday during the opening day of the 2013 Coca-Cola Classic.
The other two teams in the tournament are Eastern Kentucky and Army who will open action at 12 noon on Friday followed by the WU vs. Delaware State game at 4 p.m.
